Quick answer: A high-pitched squeal usually means the pads are getting low; grinding means the pads are worn through and metal is hitting the rotor, so stop driving on it as soon as you can; a shaking steering wheel or pulsing pedal when you brake usually means uneven or warped rotors; and a soft or sinking pedal is a hydraulic problem that needs attention right away.
Squealing or squeaking
Most brake pads have a small metal tab, called a wear indicator, that squeals against the rotor when the pad is nearly worn out. It is designed to annoy you before the pads are gone. A light squeak on the first few cold or wet stops can be normal surface rust; a squeal that stays after the brakes warm up is the warning tab.
Urgency: book within a week or two. Usual fix: new pads, sometimes rotors.
Grinding or metal-on-metal
Grinding means the friction material is gone and the steel backing plate is scraping the rotor. Every stop now cuts into the rotor and can damage the caliper. Stopping distances get longer.
Urgency: high, drive only to the shop. Usual fix: pads and rotors.

Steering wheel shakes or the pedal pulses when braking
This usually comes from rotors with uneven thickness or deposits, often called warped rotors. It is common after heavy braking or after wheels were tightened unevenly. Worn suspension parts can make it feel worse, so we check both.
Urgency: medium. Usual fix: new rotors and pads; sometimes suspension parts.
Car pulls to one side when you brake
A sticking caliper, a collapsed brake hose, or uneven pad wear can make one side grab harder. Worn control arm bushings can also cause a pull under braking.
Urgency: medium to high. Usual fix: caliper service or replacement, or suspension repair.
Soft, spongy or sinking brake pedal
Air in the lines, old moisture-filled fluid, a leak, or a failing master cylinder can all make the pedal soft. If the pedal slowly sinks to the floor at a stop, do not drive the car.
Urgency: high. Usual fix: find and fix the leak, bleed or flush the fluid.
Burning smell after driving
Usually a dragging caliper or a parking brake left on. Let the car cool and have it checked; an overheated brake can fade suddenly.
What it costs
At RS Autowerks the brake inspection is free, and front brake pads and rotors are $150 labor plus parts. See the full breakdown in How much does brake repair cost in Wayne, NJ, or our brake repair service.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my brakes squeal?
Most often the pad wear indicator is touching the rotor because the pads are nearly worn out. A brief squeak on cold or wet mornings can be normal surface rust.
Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?
Only far enough to reach a shop. Grinding means the pads are worn through and metal is scraping the rotor, which lengthens stopping distance and damages more parts with every stop.
Why does my steering wheel shake when I brake?
Usually uneven or warped front rotors. Worn suspension or steering parts can add to it, so both should be checked.
What causes a soft brake pedal?
Air or moisture in the brake fluid, a fluid leak, or a failing master cylinder. It needs to be checked before you keep driving.
Is the brake inspection free at RS Autowerks?
Yes. The brake inspection is free and you get a written quote before any work. Front brake pads and rotors are $150 labor plus parts.
