RS AutoWerks

Quick answer: At RS Autowerks in Wayne, NJ, replacing the front brake pads and rotors costs $150 in labor plus parts, and the brake inspection is free. Most drivers pay a few hundred dollars all-in for a front brake job on an everyday car; German and performance cars cost more because their parts cost more. National price guides put a pad-and-rotor job anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over $1,000 per axle (ConsumerAffairs cites RepairPal averages of roughly $900–$1,100 per axle), so getting a written quote first matters.

What goes into the price of a brake job

Every brake quote is labor plus parts. Labor is the time to lift the car, remove the wheels and calipers, swap pads and rotors, clean and lubricate the slide pins, and road-test. Parts are where prices swing the most:

  • Brake pads: economy pads are cheap; ceramic and OEM pads for European cars cost more but are quieter and dust less.
  • Rotors: most modern rotors are replaced rather than resurfaced. Large or coated rotors on BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Porsche models cost noticeably more.
  • Calipers and hardware: a sticking caliper or worn hardware adds to the bill, but you should only pay for it if it is actually failing.
  • Brake fluid: old, water-contaminated fluid can be flushed while the car is apart.

Why our front brake labor is a flat $150

Flat labor means you know the biggest unknown before we start. We inspect for free, show you the pad thickness and rotor condition, and write the parts price on the quote. You approve it before any work begins.

Can I bring my own brake parts?

Yes. If you already bought pads and rotors online, we will install them. We warranty our labor; the part itself is covered by the seller. We will tell you honestly if a part is the wrong fitment or poor quality before we install it.

Dealer vs independent shop for brakes

Dealers charge higher hourly rates and usually install only OEM parts. An independent shop can install OEM or quality aftermarket parts, often for less, and on European cars the work is identical. Ask any shop for the pad thickness measurement and photos of the rotors before you approve the job.

Signs you need brakes now, not later

  • Grinding or metal-on-metal noise (pads are gone and the rotor is being damaged)
  • Squealing that does not go away after a few stops
  • Steering wheel or pedal shaking when braking (warped or uneven rotors)
  • Car pulling to one side when braking
  • A soft or low brake pedal, or a brake warning light

Waiting until you hear grinding usually turns a pad job into a pad-and-rotor job. Read more about what each brake noise means, or see our brake repair service in Wayne, NJ.

New Jersey inspection does not check your brakes

Since August 2010, New Jersey state inspection for passenger cars is an emissions test only. Brakes, steering, suspension and tires are not checked, so nobody will flag worn brakes for you. A free inspection once a year, or whenever you hear a new noise, is the easiest way to stay ahead of it.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a brake job in Wayne, NJ?

At RS Autowerks, front brake pads and rotors are $150 labor plus parts, with a free brake inspection and a written quote before any work. The total depends mainly on your vehicle and the parts you choose.

Do I need new rotors every time I replace brake pads?

Not always. If the rotors are above the manufacturer minimum thickness and not warped or grooved, pads alone can be enough. Many modern rotors are thin and are replaced rather than resurfaced. We measure them and show you before you decide.

How long does a brake job take?

A front pad and rotor job usually takes one to two hours. Book online or call, and most cars are done the same day.

Can I supply my own brake pads and rotors?

Yes. RS Autowerks installs customer-supplied parts. We warranty the labor; the part is covered by the seller.

Does New Jersey inspection check brakes?

No. Since August 2010 New Jersey passenger-vehicle inspection is emissions only, so brakes, suspension and tires are not inspected.
