What P0455 means
The EVAP system stores fuel vapor from the gas tank and burns it in the engine instead of releasing it. The computer periodically seals the system and checks that it holds pressure or vacuum. P0455 means it could not seal at all: a large leak or an open valve.
What could be wrong
- Loose, worn or wrong gas cap — the classic cause; tighten it, and if it has a cracked seal replace it
- Stuck-open purge or vent valve
- Cracked or disconnected EVAP hose — rubber hoses crack with age and road salt
- Damaged charcoal canister
- Rusted or cracked filler neck — common on older cars in New Jersey
Is it safe to drive?
Low for safety, high for inspection. The car runs fine, but P0455 fails the NJ emissions test and you may smell fuel.
How we diagnose P0455
We smoke-test the EVAP system, which makes even a hairline leak visible, and command the purge and vent valves to check they open and close. This is the only reliable way to find an EVAP leak; guessing at parts wastes money.
If your car failed the NJ emissions inspection because of P0455, the checkup and estimate are free. Have a dealer estimate for the same repair? We typically do it for 30–50% less.
Common questions about P0455
Can a loose gas cap really cause P0455?
Yes, and it is the first thing to check. Tighten it until it clicks. If the light stays on after a few days of driving, the cap seal may be cracked or the leak is elsewhere.
How do you find an EVAP leak?
With a smoke machine. We pressurize the system with harmless smoke and look for where it escapes. It takes about 30-45 minutes and finds leaks that are invisible otherwise.
Will P0455 fail NJ inspection?
Yes. EVAP codes turn on the check engine light, which is an automatic fail in New Jersey.
How much does a P0455 repair cost?
Often very little: a gas cap is $20-40, a hose or valve is usually $100-300. A canister or filler neck is more. We quote in writing before any work.
