What P0300 means

The engine computer watches how evenly the crankshaft spins. When several cylinders fail to fire properly and it cannot pin the problem on just one, it sets P0300. You will often see it together with P0301-P0308 (cylinder-specific misfires).

What could be wrong

  • Worn spark plugs or ignition coils — the first thing to check, especially past 60,000-100,000 miles
  • Vacuum leak — a cracked intake boot, PCV hose or intake gasket leans out every cylinder
  • Fuel delivery problem — weak fuel pump, clogged filter or dirty injectors
  • Low compression — timing chain stretch, burnt valve or head gasket; less common but important to rule out
  • Bad crank or cam sensor — confuses the computer about engine position
  • Carbon build-up on direct-injection engines — common on VW, Audi, BMW and many newer engines

Is it safe to drive?

Do not ignore a flashing check engine light. A flashing light means raw fuel is going into the exhaust and can destroy the catalytic converter within a few drives. A steady light with P0300 should be looked at within days.

How we diagnose P0300

We read misfire counts per cylinder live, check spark and coil output, smoke-test for vacuum leaks, check fuel pressure and trims, and run a compression or leak-down test if the basics check out.

If your car failed the NJ emissions inspection because of P0300, the checkup and estimate are free. Have a dealer estimate for the same repair? We typically do it for 30–50% less.

Common questions about P0300

Is it safe to drive with P0300?

If the check engine light is flashing, no. Pull over when safe and have the car looked at before driving further, or you risk a catalytic converter failure that costs far more than the misfire repair. A steady light is less urgent but should be checked within days.

What is the most common cause of P0300?

Worn spark plugs and failing ignition coils, followed by vacuum leaks. On VW, Audi and BMW direct-injection engines, carbon build-up on the intake valves is also a frequent cause.

Will P0300 fail NJ inspection?

Yes. Any stored misfire code with the check engine light on fails the NJ emissions inspection.

How much does a P0300 repair cost in Wayne, NJ?

Spark plugs and a coil are usually a few hundred dollars. Vacuum leaks and sensors vary. We diagnose first and quote in writing before any work.
