We find the real cause of a lean fuel mixture code before replacing anything, quote in writing, and only do the work you approve. Any make or model, including BMW, Mercedes, Audi and VW with factory-level tools.
What P0171 means
The engine is getting more air than fuel. The computer has added as much fuel as it is allowed to in order to compensate and still cannot fix the mixture, so it sets P0171. On a V6 or V8 you may also see P0174 for Bank 2; both together usually point to a shared cause like a vacuum leak or a mass airflow sensor.
What could be wrong
- Vacuum leak — cracked intake boot, PCV valve or hose, brake booster hose, intake manifold gasket; the number-one cause
- Dirty or failing mass airflow (MAF) sensor — under-reports the air coming in
- Weak fuel pressure — tired fuel pump, clogged filter or faulty regulator
- Dirty fuel injectors
- Exhaust leak before the oxygen sensor — fools the sensor into reading lean
- Failing oxygen sensor
Is it safe to drive?
Moderate. A lean engine can run rough, hesitate and eventually cause misfires or converter damage. Fine to drive to the shop; do not leave it for months.
How we diagnose P0171
We watch fuel trims live at idle and under load, smoke-test the intake and vacuum system, test the MAF sensor and check fuel pressure. Most P0171 cases are found in under an hour.
If your car failed the NJ emissions inspection because of P0171, the checkup and estimate are free. Have a dealer estimate for the same repair? We typically do it for 30–50% less.
Common questions about P0171
What does P0171 mean in plain English?
Your engine is getting too much air for the amount of fuel, and the computer has run out of room to correct it. Most of the time there is an air leak somewhere after the airflow sensor.
Can a dirty air filter cause P0171?
Rarely by itself, but a dirty filter, a dirty MAF sensor and a cracked intake hose are often found together. We check all three.
Is P0171 expensive to fix?
Usually not. A cracked hose or PCV valve is often under $200. A fuel pump is more. We diagnose first and quote in writing.
Will P0171 fail NJ emissions inspection?
Yes, while the check engine light is on. Fix the cause, drive the car a few days so the monitors complete, then inspect.
