What P0420 means

The engine computer compares the oxygen sensor before the catalytic converter with the one after it. When the two readings look too similar, it decides the converter is no longer cleaning the exhaust the way it should and sets P0420. On a V6 or V8, Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder #1.

What could be wrong

  • Worn-out or failed catalytic converter — the most common cause on cars past 100,000 miles, but not the only one
  • Lazy or failed rear oxygen sensor — a $100-200 sensor can set the same code as a $1,000+ converter
  • Exhaust leak before the rear sensor — a cracked manifold, bad gasket or rusted flex pipe lets in air and skews the reading
  • Engine misfire or running rich — unburned fuel cooks the converter; fix the cause first or the new converter fails too
  • Coolant or oil burning — contaminates the catalyst over time
  • Wrong or counterfeit aftermarket converter — cheap online converters often set P0420 again within months

Is it safe to drive?

Usually safe to drive short-term. You will not pass the NJ emissions inspection with P0420 stored, and a failing converter that clogs can cause loss of power.

How we diagnose P0420

We graph both oxygen sensors live, smoke-test the exhaust for leaks, check for misfires and fuel trim problems, and measure converter temperature in and out. Only when everything else checks out do we condemn the converter.

If your car failed the NJ emissions inspection because of P0420, the checkup and estimate are free. Have a dealer estimate for the same repair? We typically do it for 30–50% less.

Common questions about P0420

Can I pass NJ inspection with a P0420 code?

No. P0420 turns on the check engine light, and New Jersey's OBD inspection fails any car with the light on or the code stored. Clearing the code right before inspection does not work either, because the readiness monitors reset and the car is rejected as 'not ready'.

Does P0420 always mean I need a new catalytic converter?

No. A rear oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak, a misfire or a rich-running engine can all set P0420. We test these first because they are far cheaper to fix.

How much does it cost to fix P0420 in Wayne, NJ?

A diagnostic is the starting point. If it is a sensor or exhaust leak, repairs typically run $150-400. If the converter is genuinely bad, price depends on the car; we quote in writing, and if you have a dealer estimate we usually come in 30-50% below it.

Can I keep driving with a P0420 code?

Short-term, usually yes. The car may feel normal. Long-term the converter can clog and cause poor performance, and you will fail inspection, so get it diagnosed before your sticker is due.
